Recently, many researchers have studied on RSVP extension to support host mobility. Most of the existing approaches are based on the advanced resource reservation scheme or employing RSVP Tunnel [5] mechanism in order to guarantee seamless QoS in mobile Internet. However, in those approaches, there are two problems which are not adequately addressed. One is that excessive advanced resource reservations waste network resources and impose much overhead on networks. Another problem is that RSVP Tunnel requires more resources than a normal RSVP session due to packet encapsulation and Mobile IP triangle routing. Those problems incur the inefficient usage of network resources and service disruption. In this thesis, we propose a simple and efficient mechanism to support mobility with RSVP, called Link Layer Assisted Multicast-based Mobile RSVP (LM-MRSVP), which solves the problems mentioned above. Using Layer 2 trigger, LM-MRSVP builds only one advanced resource reservation at a cell that a mobile node (MN) is likely to visit. Then it expands a RSVP session efficiently using IP multicast when a mobile node moves to a new cell. The performance of the proposed mechanism is evaluated by implementation and simulation. Experimental results show that the proposed mechanism guarantees the quality of service in mobile Internet even if handover occurs. Especially, in MPEG-1 streaming experiment, LM-MRSVP shows just 3% degradation of PSNR value after handover while 54% degradation appears with normal RSVP. In simulation results, we show that LM-MRSVP has good performance in terms of a session completion rate and forced termination rate.
