This paper presents the design, analysis and modeling of an electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) power distribution network (PDN) for broadband power noise mitigation and EMI reduction. A 2-D distributed equivalent circuit model, which is based on physical structure, is proposed for simple, accurate, and fast analysis of the electrical behavior of the EBG PDNs. The proposed model features an equation-based calculation of circuit parameter values, the expandability of the model according to the target frequency, and compatibility with the transmission line matrix (TLM) method. The experimental validation of the proposed model used Z-parameters for the full and partial EBG PDNs. The proposed model provides an accurate and efficient approach for analysis of the EBG PDN up to the frequency of interest with expandable model features. Subsequently, the power/ground cavity resonance modes in the EBG PDN are characterized by analytical solutions using the EBG cavity mode equation. We propose and experimentally demonstrate the great advantages of a high dielectric constant thin film EBG power distribution network (PDN) for the suppression of power/ground noises and radiated emissions in high-performance multi-layer digital PCBs. Five-layer test PCBs were fabricated and their scattering parameters measured. The power plane noise and radiated emissions were measured, investigated and related to the PDN impedance. This successfully demonstrated that the band-gap of the EBG was extended more than three times, covering a range of hundreds of MHz using a 1 cm x 1 cm EBG cell, the SSN was reduced from 170 mV to 10 mV and the radiated emission was suppressed by 22 dB because of the high dielectric constant thin film EBG power/ground network.
