This study explores the use of generative AIs to release violent urges through the design of an interactive artifact, the “blame-o-matic”. The device accepts few words of input and generates fictional scenarios in which a target could be harmed, providing vicarious satisfaction for negative emotions. Through an exploratory user study involving open-ended interviews and ideation, we observed participants’ reactions and perceptions of the device and gathered situated knowledge for using generative AIs to address the negative thoughts. The study reports how the blame-o-matic, which employs exaggerated sarcasm and cynicism, helps users release their negative thoughts and further discover the significance of these emotions in their lives. Our study suggests that generative AIs can address uncomfortable emotions in ways that users find both welcoming and meaningful.-
