User experience design through psychological ownership to promote responsible user behavior

Abstract

Despite the growth of shared micromobility services, the problems due to the lack of user responsibility are still ongoing. According to previous studies, the inhibition of users’ psychological ownership due to the transaction method of purchasing temporal accesibility instead of the legal ownership is the main cause of the decrease in users’ responsibility. Based on the framework of design affordance principles for psychological ownership, the study explores and analyzes ways to increase users’ psychological ownership of shared micromobilities through the workshop. As a result, the study presents eight considerations for the UX/UI design of shared micromobility services. Afterward, the study identifies the importance of the design approach considering psychological ownership by implementing and evaluating design considerations in the actual use environments. Furthermore, through discussion, the study provides design guidelines for practitioners to consider in UX/UI design to inspire users’ psychological ownership of micromobility in shared micromobility services. This study is a practical reference for applying the theory of psychological ownership to the design field. The results provide resources that can be expanded to design perspectives in various areas that deal with changes in users’ feelings of ownership.
