Detect-and-Avoid technology is attracting new attention due to the upcoming integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into civil airspace. Manned and unmanned aircrafts rely on DAA technologies for safe operations. However, DAA technologies encounter numerous technical and regulatory problems. To solve these issues, this paper analyzes the definition of well clear using the concept of modified tau for detection technologies: 1) Well clear analysis, 2) minimum field of view analysis, 3) risk analysis, and consideration of detection sensors. In conclusion, a consideration of an airborne detection sensor, especially of low size, weight, and power, is studied for various UAS operations.
