In digital image processing, a system consisted of Canny edge detector and Hough transform (HT) has been well-known and widely used for line detection, but HT, one of important parts in the line detection system, requires long execution time and high computational complexity. Therefore, Parallel hough transform (PHT) [1] was proposed to reduce requirements of standard hough transform (SHT) implementation. PHT reduced execution time and computational complexity by applying parallel, pipeline architectures and approximations. However, PHT is still far from perfect due to the accumulated errors induced from cosine and sine approximation. In order to resolve this problem, we propose a bidirectional incremental hough transform (BIHT). So, by applying the BIHT and Canny edge detector hardware, we can implement real-time line detection hardware system.
