A transparent liner engine was used to observe the basic spray process in a cylinder of the GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine. The images of developing sprays were obtained by a CCD camera and subsequently processed to characterize the spray. In the early stage of injection process, there are no differences between the long duration spray and the short duration spray. It was observed that some part of the spray was separated from the main stream of spray. The separation could result in the wall wetting and the loss of charge attending the stratification.
