We fabricated a closely packed Au nanoparticle monolayer with millimeter dimensions on a hydrophilic Si substrate using a water/oil interface method. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering of Rhodamine 6G dye molecules adsorbed on these substrates was measured. For this structure, we simulated the electromagnetic-field enhancement when the laser light was focused on the sample, assuming the hexagonal unit cell. We suggest that the strong field enhancement arises from interstitial gaps between nanoparticles. (C) 2011 American Vacuum Society. [DOI: 10.1116/1.3566018]
