Properties of titania particles prepared by the flame spray pyrolysis were investigated by XRD TEM, SEM, and compared with those prepared by the conventional spray pyrolysis. Unlike the conventional spray pyrolysis, the ratio of anatase phase to rutile phase increases with the increase of flame temperature, and pure anatase titania particles were obtained when the mixing-cup temperature of the flame was higher than 1100°C. The pure anatase titania particles had 36nm of crystallite in diameter and 44m /g of surface area This is close to the maximum surface area obtained from spherical titania particles of 36 nm in diameter. Short residence time in the order of mili-second and high rate of heating and cooling in the flame and growth zone are responsible for the formation of anatase phase at much higher temperature than 900°C. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
