Detection of surface breaking cracks in two dimensions

We prove that the gradient of the solution to the crack problem blows up at every tip of surface breaking cracks if the boundary data satisfy a practical condition. On the basis of this result, we propose an algorithm for detecting the location, the orientation, and the intensity of the tip of a surface breaking crack.
