Sound of King Song-Dok Bell

Abstract

The King Song-Dok Bell, one of the many famous bell in Korea, has a long lasting beating sound with a period that is slightly over 3 second. It also has a carrier frequency of approximately 64 Hz, which is very low. These are considered desirable characteristics of Korean bells. The sound of the bell is determined by the overall structure of the bell, including the pipe on top and the hollow on the ground, below the mouth of the bell. Artistically, the gigantic bell is decorated with various lines on the bell complement the carvings. Due to the eye catching intricate artistic designs, the King Song-Dok Bell can hardly be seen as an immerse bell, even though it has a height of 3.66 m, a maximum diameter of 2.23 m and a mass of 18,900 kg.
