Selective catalytic reactor(SCR) is one of flue gas treatment devices which removes NOx by the reaction of ammonia injected in the catalyst layer. Its performance is dependent on the effective mixing of the flue gas with ammonia and the evenly distributed flow above the catalyst layer. This study is to establish the improvement of those two conditions by evaluating the design of SCR and its duct through the reduced scale model test(1/10 scale) and numerical simulations. For this purpose in the model test, measurements of velocity distribution and flow visualizations are conducted to examine the performance of mixing devices above ammonia injection nozzles in the duct, the length of the duct as a macroscopic mixing time and various shapes of guide vanes. Numerical simulations are also performed to predict the whole flow fields along with the ammonia mixing both in the SCR and its reduced scale model. Basic quantitative and qualitative design data are acquired from this study. It also shows a typical example of combining reduced scale model studies with numerical simulation for the design improvement of thermo-fluid devices.
