Configuration is the process of identifying a list of necessary components to fulfill a customers tailored requirement. Since expert systems for configuration have been developed based on either rules or constraint satisfaction problems with a limited reasoning capability, in reaction we have adopted the Constraint and Rule Satisfaction Problems (CRSP) approach. To solve CRSP, a concurrent, interactive and hybrid reasoning scheme is devised to assist negotiating/reconciling the conflict in goals. This approach is evidenced in the configuration process during personal computer purchase. We found a high potential of CRSP-based expert systems for the configurations aid in the next generation of the intelligent electronic shopping mall.
