Summary: Machining with boring bars frequently induce chatter vibration because of the low stiffness and damping of cantilever shape of boring bars. To increase stiffness and damping, a graphite epoxy composite boring bar was constructed and tested. In machining S45C tapered steel bar workpieces, the graphite epoxy composite boring bar allowed for 5 times larger depth of cut compared to that of the steel boring bar, before the onset of chatter. The damping of the graphite epoxy composite boring bar was increased more than 50% over that of the steel boring bar, and the natural frequency of the graphite epoxy composite boring bar was also increased significantly. © 1988 CIRP.
