Low-velocity impact response of graphite/epoxy laminates is investigated using piezoelectric materials. A finite element formulation is presented for modeling the behavior of laminated composites with integrated piezoelectric sensors. The formulation is based on the first-order shear deformation theory. The present model takes into account the mass and the stiffness of the piezoelectric elements. Impact force history is approximated to sine wave in the impact analysis. Drop weight impact tests are performed for graphite/epoxy laminates with piezoelectric sensors. Then, the experimental results are compared to the finite element analysis. For 3cm and 5cm drop heights, impact tests are performed. Results of finite element analysis and the experimental results show good agreement with each other.
