A problem of analysis and design of serial production lines, closed with respect to the number of carries available for parts transportation between operation, is formulated. An asymptotic solution is given for two machines-two buffers systems. A case study of a paint shop operation at an automobile assembly plant is described. It is shown that optimization of the system with respect to the number of carriers and the capacity of the feedback buffer may lead to a substantial improvement of systems performance. © 1993.-
