Rate adaptation for network bandwidth fluctuation is one of the important and challenging issues in video streaming using P2P overlay multicast. Without proper adaptation scheme for varying network bandwidth, there always exists possibility of significant loss from the shortage of available bandwidth, which have a seriously bad influence on the stream quality. We studied on P2P video streaming scheme in peer-to-peer network, which adaptively adjusts the stream rate from multiple partner peers using frame type aware scheduler according to the network bandwidth of the supplying peer nodes. For each partner, by allocating the request quantity based on its bandwidth condition, frame type aware scheduler decreases excessive request of stream data which not only consumes the available bandwidth but also has no benefit for stream quality. In order to reduce tree management complexity, we proposed rate adaptation scheme on top of the peer-to-peer data driven mechanism where, for streaming data, each overlay node requests missing stream chunks (segments) to multiple partners based on the information of buffer contents of each partner. Proposed streaming rate adaptation scheme significantly decreases uselessly received video frames without degrading streaming quality. Especially, when the bandwidth supply is insufficient, the effectiveness of proposed scheme significantly increases.
