In this thesis, novel implementation techniques of all-optical wavelength conversion, all-optical logic gates, and optical clock recovery are proposed and demonstrated by using the transverse magnetic (TM)-mode absorption nulls of Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LD) and two interesting response characteristics of the FP-LD to external optical injections. An FP-LD shows several different responses to external optical injections depending on injected beam``s polarization and the spectral location. When a transverse electric (TE)-mode optical beam is injected near one of TE lasing modes of the FP-LD, the LD shows typical injection locking characteristics, while the FP-LD shows small gain and results in absorption nulls at each longitudinal modes for TM-mode optical injection beams. The output of the injection-locked FP-LD shows several interesting features, including the red-shift of the cavity modes of the LD and the asymmetric injection-locking curve. Using the absorption nulls of the FP-LD for TM-mode injected beam, which are red- shifted by injection-locking, the absorption of the continuous wave (CW) probe beam can be optically controlled; i.e. the optically controlled absorption modulation is achieved using an injection-locked FP-LD. This absorption modulation of an injection-locked FP-LD is applied for implementing a simple and efficient all-optical wavelength conversion and carried experiments demonstrated that the proposed wavelength converter can perform low power wavelength conversion (about -2.4 dBm) of 2.5 Gbit/s $2^{31}$-1 pseudorandom signal with a wavelength range of ~ 46 nm (from 1527 nm to 1573 nm) with more than 10 dB extinction ratios. For single-to-multi channel wavelength conversion, all optical wavelength conversion at 2.5 Gbit/s with two channels has been demonstrated without additional penalty increase.
