Recently, a number of expert systems have been developed for nuclear engineering. In this work, two expert systems are developed to diagnose the failure of rod control system. The developed systems aid the rapid detection and repair of the failed rod control system component in order to increase the efficiency of nuclear power plant. The rod control system is divided into Logic Cabinet and Power Cabinet. The failure diagnosis system is individually developed for each cabinet. The knowledge for the failure diagnosis is represented as the rule and fact. Those systems are rule-based ones. The knowledges are acquired from the troubleshooting table of technical manual [2,3]. And additional knowledges are acquired through the analysis of the circuit design.
In the case of Power Cabinet Failure Diagnosis, the structure of failures is hierarchical. For convenience, the failure diagnosis is divided into level-1, 2, 3. In the case of Logic Cabinet Failure Diagnosis, the failures are divided into seven groups.
The developed systems show satisfactory capabilities within the prepared expertise. To diagnose the broad range of failure, however, extension of knowledge base is required. The systems are built using PROLOG language on IBM PC AT compatible.
