dc.description.abstractOne-dimensional stress wave equation was solved by the method of characteristics to predict the longitudinal wave progation in a stepped cylindrical bar. For the comparison of theoretical predictions with physical phenomena, experiments were carried out in a freely suspended stepped cylindrical bar. Experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results in the wave propagation velocity and in the wave forms.eng
