When we model the Finite State Markov Chain (FSMC) mathematically in wireless networks, a key issue rely on how to divide finite states, that is, how to partition the received Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) range into finite states. The Equal Probability (EP) method and the Equal Duration (ED) method have been widely used. Lately, a new method which with a criterion that the non-adjacent probability must be sufficiently small, called the Adjacent Transition (AT) method, has been suggested. Accordingly, an investigation on the performance of the MAC layer using the AT method is needed, and a comparison the MAC layer performance for those three methods is essential. The objective of the present study was to analyze the performance of a queueing system with Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC). We applied the AT method for a partition of the SNR and used the Effective Bandwidth Function (EBF) for performance evaluation. In analysis, we approximated the tail distribution of the queue length as a measure of queuing performance. Furthermore, we validated our system model to confirm that our analysis was correct. Finally, we compared our results with results from the EP and the ED method performance analysis, concluding that the ED method and the AT method perform similarly.
