Mobile IP (MIP) provides mobility support for hosts connected to the Internet without changing their IP address. Route optimization alleviates triangle routing and data loss during a handoff by informing the correspondent host and the previous foreign agent of the mobile host’s care-of address. Hierarchical foreign agent (FA) management reduces the MIP registration overhead of a local handoff and the transition period during which tunneled packets may be lost. FA buffering further alleviates loss by trying to recover those misplace packets during a transition. In this thesis, we propose a hierarchical partial binding FAs scheme for MIP. The proposed scheme reduce the registration overhead more efficiently and perform the faster handoff in the hierarchical FAs by partial inter-domain binding between new FA and the upper FA of previous domain when a mobile host (MH) moves to a different domain. As the registration delay in proposed scheme decreases, the buffer size becomes small. Simulation results show the improvements obtained by partial binding FAs when the MH moves to a different domain particularly. To support real-time services as well as data services, more efficient handoff schemes, which reduce the registration delay, are demanded. The proposed scheme provides less registration delay than other schemes, which result in more efficiency in hierarchical MIP network that offers multimedia services.
