Service industry R&D has become more essential nowadays, and there are many researches related to services being held around the world. Above all, R&D strategy of service industry is considered essential to bring up the service industry more effectively. Therefore, technology roadmaps which provide guidelines for selection and concentration of services and their related technologies need to be studied for R&D strategy of service industry. However, at present there are problems and challenging issues to reach technology roadmaps for R&D strategy of service industry, and they are summarized as three matters as follows. First of all, a new visualization method of patent map for emerging technologies is required to understand status and trend of emerging technologies in a simpler and easier way. Second, it is a challenging issue to develop objective and systematic methods or analysis tools to evaluate emerging technologies for the service industry with identifying technologies missed out by experts at the initial stage. Third, it is in need of technology roadmaps customized for the service industry, which provide technology’s priority in a service-oriented aspect for R&D strategy of service industry. In this thesis, we provide methods to solve these problems and challenging issues. First, we proposed a new visualization method of patent map to help understand status and trend of emerging technologies in a simpler and easier way with overcoming drawbacks of current patent maps, and we applied it to the pervasive computing technology. Second, we extended the patent map suggested. Taking a step forward, we suggested a service-oriented technology roadmap (SoTRM) using the extended patent map. It provided the order of technologies in a service-oriented aspect considering the priority values of services first, based on the four layers of patents, keywords, technologies, and services.
