The IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks (WLANs) employs a medium access control (MAC) which is based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). The random backoff is used as a collision avoidance mechanism. The randomness of the backoff reduces the collision probability, but can not completely eliminate collisions. It is known that the performance of the 802.11 WLAN is more significantly degraded as the number of stations increases. We propose a MIMO(Multiple-input Multiple-output) based collision resolution scheme in uplink as a cross-layer design, in order to mitigate a collision problem and, consequently, to enhance the system performance. If the number of antennas of access point (AP) is two or more times larger than that of each station(STA), the AP can receive two or more data streams simultaneously from different STAs using a MIMO multiplexing scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in a saturation case and is compared with that of the conventional WLANs. Through the analytical and simulation results, our proposed scheme shows a significant performance enhancement in terms of throughput and delay.
