Mobility management and quality-of-service(QoS) provisioning are very important to the wireless network with the development of mobile nodes like laptop computer and notebook. In this thesis, we propose an architecture which supports both mobility and QoS management and minimizes signaling load. Mobile IP(MIP) is proposed to manage mobility of devices. Mobile IP makes mobile nodes remain attached to the Internet by using IP addresses of home address and care-of-address(CoA) even if they move away from current link. However, the operation of MIP takes excessive signaling cost to register because a mobile node has to register with its home agent whenever it changes connectivity of link. So we propose a hierarchical mobile IP with paging(P-HMIP) scheme to reduce the registration cost. In this scheme, we adopt a hierarchical and paging schemes at the same time. Then we derive the signaling cost function of registration to analyze the performance of proposed scheme. Using this cost function, we can determine the optimal size of each area which makes the registration cost minimum. Another aim of this thesis is to guarantee quality of service(QoS) even if a mobile node moves to another network. We adopt MRSVP(Resource reSerVation Protocol with Mobile hosts) to the architecture proposed for mobility management. Then we modify MRSVP to reduce the reservation cost by introducing Temporary RESV messages which reserve the resource only once and for some time. We also derive the signaling cost function of reservation for performance analysis and then find optimal network for minimal reservation cost. Finally, we find the optimal size of paging area to minimize the signaling cost for mobility and QoS using the previous results or derived cost functions.
