dc.description.abstract | ATM is a connection-oriented network that the connection must be established before the actual data transmission. IP multicast relies on the existence of a low-level multicast/broadcast facility. The obvious analogous to a legacy multicast/broadcast LAN would be a bi-directional multipoint-to-multipoint (mpt-mpt) connection in ATM. Currently All ATM switches support some form of point-to-multipoint (pt-mpt) forwarding. But this point-to-multipoint (pt-mpt) connections can be only unidirectional from root to leaf direction due to so-called "VC Merge```` or "Cell Interleaving" problem when using ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5), the most common ATM adaptation layer used to transmit data across ATM networks. Therefore, ATM generally needs to utilize multiple Virtual Circuits to support multipoint-to-multipoint (mpt-mpt). This leads to scaling problems and the possibility of VC exhaustion. Another related incompatibility is that IP multicast is receiver-initiated while, until UNI 4.0, ATM signaling support only sender-controlled group membership. In this thesis, In the ATM environment which supports only fundamental point-to-point (pt-pt) connection, we propose a method for multipoint-to-multipoint (mpt-mpt) communication, which is very analogous to legacy IP multicasting over LAN. Our proposal is based on the point-to-point (pt-pt) connection which links all nodes as a ring-shaped (VC-Ring connection) and simple server(Topology Server) which specify the neighbor node to be connected together. The basic idea is to simulate the broadcast mechanism of legacy shared-link LAN by logical ring-shaped link. The Topology Server is composed of four parts, Topology management, Group management, and Security certification management and manual configuration management. TOPS clients at each client node process the three types of packet, unicast, multicast, and TOPS packet. The multicast packet from the application is copied and forwarded to neighbor node automatically, while pack... | eng |
