Recently, the researches on power converter technologies are focused on designing the high efficient, high density, small size and volume, and cost effective power converter. In this sense, the magnetic coupled inductor techniques are very attractive since it gives a small size, small volume, and low cost in designing a power converter. In this dissertation, two kinds of the novel power converters, one for the power factor correction and the other for the battery drive applications, which adopts the magnetic coupled inductor techniques, are introduced as : 1) Single-stage single switched rectifier/regulator with magnetic coupled nondissipative snubber for low power level off-line applications, and 2) Dual coupled inductor-fed isolated boost converter for low voltage battery drive system. For power factor correction application, a new single-stage single-switched forward converter with magnetic coupled nondissipative snuber is proposed. The proposed converter gives the good power factor correction (PFC), low current harmonic distortion, and tight output voltage regulation. The prototype shows the IEC 1000-3-2 requirements are met satisfactorily with nearly unity power factor. This proposed converter with magnetic coupled nondissipative snubber is particularly suited for low power level power supply applications. Then, the characterization of dc-link capacitor voltage stress in the single stage single switched converter with magnetic coupled nondissipative snubber is presented. A design procedure for optimizing the proposed converter design by limiting the dc link capacitor voltage stress, maintaining high efficiency while complying with IEC1000-3-2 harmonic current requirement is introduced.
