Wireless mobile ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks offer a common wired infrastructure to support the mobility of wireless terminals independent of the wireless access protocol. There can be two major approaches to wireless mobile ATM networks depending on the type of wireless access: end-to-end ATM connection model and ATM-to-non-ATM internetworking model. In this thesis, we propose new location management and paging algorithms for two types of wireless mobile ATM networks. An integrated location management based on the PNNI (private network-to-network interface) routing and signaling protocols is proposed to support the mobility of the mobile ATM end terminals. An external location management based on hierarchically distributed location servers is proposed for the non-ATM end terminals. In addition, we propose an advanced paging algorithm to reduce the paging cost. It is based on the concept of implicit location registrations of mobile terminals. For the ATM mobile terminals, a dynamic scope-based location management using PNNI protocol is proposed. According to the scheme, the reachability information about the mobile````s access point to the ATM switch is advertised within the region of PNNI hierarchy specified by the scope which is assigned to each mobile. Using the reachability information, the call connection is established. Since the reachability scope is dynamically allocated to each mobile depending on its mobility and its call pattern along with the penetration degree and the signaling cost, the proposed algorithm reduces the location management cost compared with the fixed scope method. For the cellular mobile terminals, we propose an external location management based on the hierarchically distributed location servers in peer group structure of PNNI hierarchy.
