The domino effect can occur in ill-structured systems resulting in an uncontrolled dissemination of state recovery. This thesis discusses a method of the state recovery which is free of the domino effect in systems of processes which communicate only through SEND, RECEIVE primitive operations. This recovery measure reduces the overhead due to frequent saving of the recovery points by the optimal execution of the CHECK command. The effect of the CHECK command is to establish a checkpoint. For systems which permit only CHECK, RECEIVE, and SEND primitive operations executed in a prescribed order, we show that by suitable placement of checkpoints the domino effect can be avoided.
