(A) study on the naming system in the integrated network

Abstract

Characteristics of integrated networks, which consists of computers, local area networks, and wide area networks, are heterogeneity, large scale, and flexibility. We propose a user-friendly naming system for an integrated network in this thesis. The proposed integrated naming scheme comprises a global name and a local name of an existing system in addition to a context name. The global name uses the geographical naming scheme. A request to bind a name to an object is passed to the context resolution server which binds information on the name through a context table; a user may store the binding information such as abbreviation of the name and a multilingual name in the context table. The binding information on objects is distributed among several servers and computers, but a user need not be concerned with which the binding actually takes places in. The naming system is flexible and constructed without drastic modification of the existing naming systems. The potential advantages of the naming system are discussed, and possible expansions are suggested for further study.
