Surface modification of living cells for the potential benefit of humans is an enduring pursuit in scientific endeavor. Single-cell nanoencapsulation is a promising technology that integrates living cells with synthetic materials to provide cellular protection against harsh environmental factors. In recent years, research has extended its focus from solely protecting cells to enhancing their inherent functions and acquiring exogenous functions. This thesis explores a versatile approach involving nanoencapsulation of living cells within a supramolecular metal-organic complex of Fe3+ and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid to achieve chemical augmentation of cellular functions. The first section of this thesis focuses on a facile and versatile strategy for the catalytic empowerment of living cells. The second section of this thesis covers the dynamic transformation of nanoshells, which actively interact with their environment, enabling rapid adaptation.
