In the past decade, extensive research has been conducted on anion exchange membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers driven in alkaline environments, leveraging the advantage of designing them at a lower cost by using inexpensive metals for catalysts and stack hardware. The prevailing research trends have predominantly focused on the design of anion exchange membranes and ionomer binders with high ion conductivity and alkaline stability. As a result of these efforts, several materials have successfully reached the commercialization stage. However, the common challenge persists in the inadequate performance and durability of anion membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers. In this thesis, the investigation identifies the root cause of performance and durability deficiencies originating from issues at the ionomer/catalyst interface and discusses strategies to address them. Finally, the significance and limitations of this research, along with directions for future research, are outlined.
