This work describes photochemical surface modification of Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC), a one of thermoplastics currently used as microfluidic device, with non-biofouling polymers films. Cyclic olefin copolymer possesses many advantages, for example optical, mechanical properties, however it is limited for applications due to its native property. Therefore it requires surface modification for using in microfluidic device and in this respect aryl azide based photochemical grafting is very effective for COC because of simple and accomplishment of stable bond with surface. We synthesized aryl azide-ATRP(atom transfer radical polymerization) initiator which includes bromine moiety inducing ATRP reaction, for photochemical grafting and then non-biofouling polymer films was formed by atom transfer radical polymerization. In chapter 1, we report the indirectly photochemical patterning of COC surfaces with poly(3-(methacryloylamino)propyl)-dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl)-ammonium hydroxide) (p(MPDSAH)) and the non-biofouling effect was confirmed by patterning of NIH 3T3 cells and fluorescence protein (TRITC-streptavidin) and chapter 2 describes the selective immobilization of biomolecules with the non-biofouling effect on the COC surface. Random copolymer (p(MPDSAH-r-PEGMA)) and p(MPDSAH) films were polymerized on the aryl azide-ATRP initiator grafted surface and click reaction was performed on the p(MPDSAH) films for selective immobilization of proteins. The non-biofouling flims on the COC surface were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle goniometry.
