Part I: Alicyclic polyimides were prepared from aymmetric alicyclic dianhydride, 5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydrofuryl)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride (DOCDA) and 4,4’-oxydianiline (ODA) by the polycondensation in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) followed by chemical imidization. The alicyclic polyimides were functionalized by epoxidation of the double bond in the alicyclic dianhydride unit. The functionalized polyimide containing epoxy functional groups in the main chains, poly(epoxyimide), had the inherent viscosities of 0.33 dL/g, and was soluble in aprotic polar solvents such as NMP, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), etc. Part II: A self-assembled energy transfer system composed of donor dyes (guest) at the periphery of poly(propylene amine) dendrimer (host) and acceptor dyes at the inside of the dendrimer was constructed by simple mixing of the dendrimer and the dyes. The interaction between the dendrimer and the dyes was highly selective and specific. The efficient energy transfer from the dansyl acid molecules (guest) to the rose bangal molecules (guest) was observed. Most of the emission of dansyl acid molecules (donors) at the periphery of G5 dendrimer was quenched (98%) due to the energy transfer to the rose bangal molecules (acceptors).
