Droplets are used in analytical systems as micro reactors or micro vessels that can confine and carry specific volume of liquid for chemical reaction or other applications. We have developed the method for the coalescence of binary droplets that is essential for mixing and reaction in droplet-based microfluidic systems. Application of DC electric potential below a hundred voltage causes the coalescence of microdroplets which was formed in the aqueous two-phase system. Finite element analysis of droplet coalescence shows that the formation of recirculating flow enables the coalescence of two droplets.
