In pursuit of enriching the user experience with light embedded in home appliances, we have collected evidence and insights through three kinds of approaches, including a review of legal guidance, an online user survey (N=422), and measuring the luminance of product light interfaces of four air purifiers. We deliberately selected relevant articles from Act, Decree, and Rules on the Prevention of Light Pollution to adopt them for framing the guideline. It should address the issue and provide quantitative criteria considering the communication within any stakeholders in a corporate. We figured out potentials of legal instructions to be revised into the practical guidelines of product light interfaces of home appliances. Also, survey results and video reports explained why the guideline of the light interface of home appliances is necessary. In addition, the measures of premium products result in practical insights that the guideline may refer to. The analysis unveiled the optical properties and discovered related features that brands have tried to optimize the product light interfaces. Such observation contributes to building the guide to be practically meaningful by covering a more comprehensive range of light-related concerns beyond the glare. By expanding the scope of examination products and measurements, we expect to fully develop a light interface guideline of home appliances that help designers creatively explore design alternatives while conforming to the basic requirements.
