In this study, the energy harvesting performance of the regenerative hybrid electrodynamic damper (RHED) recently developed for cable vibration mitigation was experimentally investigated. To this end, the power flow of the RHED was first analyzed, and the power that can be harvested from the total power of the RHED was determined. Next, a series of tests to examine the dynamic characteristics of the RHED were carried out, and then the harvestable power was obtained by conducting additional experiments with different external resistances. Finally, a new energy harvesting circuit suitable for the characteristics of the RHED was proposed, and shaking table tests were conducted to evaluate its energy harvesting performance. It was demonstrated from the test results that the maximum circuit efficiencies were more than 70% under sinusoidal excitations and 67.3% under random excitations, respectively. Therefore, it was experimentally verified that the RHED could harvest the electrical energy effectively through the proposed harvesting circuit. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
