In this paper, we introduce a vehicular IoT architecture by exploring ways to improve networking in terms of security and reliability, and by suggesting the data collection and sharing models of connected vehicles. First, we propose a security offloading system for resource-constrained IoT devices by offloading the handshake and data transmission of a security protocol to a non-constrained node. Second, we suggest a mechanism that improves the reliability and responsiveness of vehicular IoT networks by mitigating excessive packet retransmission and IPv6 fragmentation caused by the low network stability and the small maximum transmission unit of a standard IPv6-based IoT network. Finally, we propose a data platform architecture that includes the standardization of various vehicle data and security threat data generated in the vehicle's internal and external networks, and systematic collection and sharing models to the data server. The proof-of-concept implementation using a real car and use case studies show the feasibility of this research.
