Natural gas and carbon dioxide need solid porous materials for effective storage, transport or sequestration. Scalability, cost and feasibility of porous structures prevent many emerging materials to be promising candidates. Most of the methods that are used in porous material synthesis requires expensive multistep synthesis of multifunctional monomers and uses expensive catalysts (Pd, Pt). Here, we developed a facile variant of Friedel-Crafts synthesis of highly porous covalent organic polymers (COPs) based on an unprecedented solvent mediated cross-linking. Chlorinated solvents behave as a both solvent and linker in the presence of $AlCl_3$. Studies on three classes of 15 different monomers led us to produce 29 new COPs-124-152 by using methylene chloride, chloroform, and 1,2-dichloroethane. Chapter 2 deals with the synthesis and characterization of these COPs. In chapter 3, porosity and low pressure gas adsorption behavior of these solvent-linked COPs were studied. We found that COP-130 and COP-140 show great $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and $H_2$ uptake. COP-130 has the highest surface area because of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene building block. Among all COPs synthesized here, COP-150 was the most feasible to study because of its inexpensive preparation and highly flexible nature. We believe the method we have developed here, can be generalized to all chlorinated solvents as linkers and our studies also continue on using these porous polymers for high pressure methane storage applications.
