Sustainable supply chain strategy

Abstract

Issues of sustainability have become increasingly important in creating value and strengthening competitive advantages of firms. This dissertation consists of three essays considering environmental sustainability in a supply chain. The first essay investigates how the elimination of double marginalization phenomenon in a centralized supply chain affects polluting emissions and abatement efforts of a manufacturer. The second essay examines the interaction between roles of consumer awareness and supply chain strategies in curbing manufacturer emissions. The third essay compares the economic and environmental impacts of traditional government penalties and consumer awareness. It also examines whether a retailer’s greater responsibility on upstream pollution reduces manufacturer emissions and investigates effective combinations of pollution-curbing measures.
