Composites in aerospace application need to be evolved from the simple load bearing structure to multi functioning aerospace structures through state-of-the-art technology in layered composites. One typical multifunctional application is the stealth space shield which is to protect very important space asset from harsh space environmental conditions especially from hypervelocity impact of micro meteoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) with the other added function of radar absorption. We have observed the need of the function of usage, impact, and damage monitoring in space structures when the threat damage is not immediately lethal for future chance of safety securement. Another function of radar absorbing is not common but critical to some defense related satellite. Some key elemental design considerations are studied for the integrated multifunctional space structure like the stealth space shield with fiber optic monitoring capability under harsh space environmental conditions including high vacuum, thermal cycling, atomic oxygen and UV radiation, and hypervelocity MMOD impact.
