dc.description.abstractTransparent ceramics have attracted noticeable attention as transparent material in harsher thermal and mechanical environments. In particular, yttria (Y2O3) ceramic is considered as the most promising optical materials in infrared (IR) region. However, yttria has been restricted for the variety of applications because of deficient mechanical properties. Recently, researchers have found that Y2O3-MgO nanocomposite can offer not only IR transparent but enhanced mechanical strength. Nevertheless, scattering at the grain boundary results from different refractive index between yttria and magnesia reduce the IR transmittance. To increase the IR transmittance and transparent wavelength region, grain size should be reduced that significantly influenced by initial powder conditions such as particle size, agglomeration. In this regard, there will be a better chance of obtaining outstanding IR transparency characteristics if we explore the synthesis of initial powder. To obtain the fine and highly homogeneous nanoparticles, GNP combustion was conducted under the various synthesis conditions. The quantity of glycine as fuel was adjusted to diminish both the initial particle size and agglomeration and to define optimized powders by GNP. Conventional sintering was superseded by hot-pressing to reduce the domain coarsening at low temperature with applied pressure that we could obtain high transmittance in extensive infrared region.-
