dc.description.abstractAs many countries have increasingly provided IPTV service, IPTV service is the killer application for the NGN. To support it, the network providers satisfy the multiple QoS requirements because IPTV service includes various types of services such as VoD, PPV, T-commerce services. For example, because video services are very intolerant of packet loss, the network providers should consider loss rate guarantee. To provide QoS for IPTV services, an admission control is necessary. However, the previous admission control schemes have several problems for supporting IPTV services. Firstly, most of the previous admission control schemes just focused on unicast services not considering the effect of multicast traffic. Secondly, the parameter based admission control scheme wastes the network resources, so it results in the degradation of utilization. Thirdly, the probe based admission control schemes increase the network load and have the latency of set-up time. Lastly, the passive measurement based admission control schemes just use the available bandwidth or delay. To cope with these problems, we propose a new admission control algorithm for IPTV services, which is called “Multiple QoS Parameter-Based admission control”. The key features of this algorithm are as follows: Firstly, the proposed admission control algorithm uses the network state information and QoS parameters collected by passive measurement. Secondly, this algorithm conducts the different procedures as the different service classes. Thirdly, it is distributed approach: The admission control operates at the ingress node for unicast services and operates at RP for multicast services. As a result, we can guarantee the multiple QoS requirements for IPTV services and increase throughput and also support multicast services as well as unicast services by the proposed admission control algorithm.eng
