Recently, bioinformatics has become an important area of research because of its prospective results, diverse applicable areas; and, in order to achieve success in bioinformatics, research collaborations must integrate various fields of study such as mathematics, statistics, biology, computer science, and chemistry. However, the fact that bioinformatics requires research collaboration also produces some limitations such as the unwillingness to share knowledge, lack of trust, time and location limitations, lack of knowledge circulation, and lack of prior experiences. So far, KM (Knowledge Management) has played an important role in R&D (Research and Development) by improving research efficiency and effectiveness and providing many benefits to R&D organizations since the main resource and outcome of R&D is knowledge. This paper suggests a KMS (Knowledge Management System) for research collaboration in bioinformatics. Even though there are many commercial KMS packages, what is most important is how well the system reflects the environment of users, because a system that reflects the characteristics of an organization is considered to be working effectively. This paper uses two types of approaches to design a more customer-satisfying KMS. The first is an analysis of bioinformatics in terms of its own characteristics With a focus on the literature in this area. A Biodatabase, diverse source format, and common protocol to share knowledge are shown to be required in the system. The second is an analysis of general research collaborations. The Kano model is used to reflect the characteristics of users. To derive modules, benchmarking of existing KMS packages is performed. As a result, eighteen attractive, six one-dimensional, four must-be, and two indifferent modules are derived from the Kano model. By combining the two results, the design of KMS in research collaborations is shown as a result. The design is applied into the Korean SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism...eng
