A mobile card is one of the results of the current convergence between communication service and transaction service. In Korea, a commercial service of the mobile card was launched in June 2002. However, only 1,500 subscribers have the handset with an IC chip for the service in March 2003. This mobile card is a brand-new technology that can be used as a credit card by inserting the IC chip into the socket at the back of phone. Firstly, in terms of services, mobile card is quite similar to credit card. Mobile card is issued from the existing credit card company. Although there are some differences in their coverage and characteristics, both of them operate on a similar basis, which means that they perform the economically same functions. In this context, this study consider that the adoption patterns of mobile card may be similar to those of credit card and thereby assume that the diffusion parameters for mobile card services are the same as those for existing credit card services. Secondly, in terms of products, the phones for mobile card services are also similar to the new phones like cdma 1x or color phones. Users have to buy a specialized phone for mobile card services. One thing that mobile card services have in common is that the service users have to change their phones in order to use the new services. Hence, this study uses the diffusion parameters of these two phones to forecast the demand for mobile card services under the assumption that the change of phone has a similar pattern. In sum, to estimate the parameters for demand forecast, this study use the combined data of credit card and new phones because mobile cards have characteristics of both. In forecasting the demand, usually large amount of historical data is required. However, there are no historical trend data because mobile card service is in the early stage of introduction.
