Siemens VDO, German electronic and mechatronic developer announced an innovative braking device called Electronic Wedge Brake (EWB). It uses self-energizing effect using compared to conventional hydraulic devices. Also, EWB features more fast response characteristic, reducing stopping distance by 15 percent compared to hydraulic ones. But EWB is very sensitive to the variation of the system parameter error, such as friction coefficient variance during braking. Small parametric error can be highly amplified through self-energizing effect, degrading system response characteristic. For this reason, robust control technique using sliding mode control was developed in KAIST as a computer simulation in 2007 [7]. This research is focused on developing a new type of EWB which is called Electronic Noncircular Gear Brake. This suggested that brake system has the possibility applying variable wedge angle to system by using noncircular gears. For the first step to realize the system, normal system response is validated. Also robust control techniques making system stable for parametric variances, and particularly the pad friction-coefficient error will be considered as followed [7]. Another method to make system robust such as Limp Home mode control can be developed as well.
