In this thesis, we propose two optimum receive antenna selection diversity schemes for BPSK signals when arbitrary number of transmit antennas and receive antennas are used in quasi-static frequency nonselective Rayleigh fading channels. We assume that the receiver has a perfect channel state information and that the transmitter has no information about the channel at all. For optimum performance, we consider a posteriori probability of hard decision as a reliability measure of hard decision, which is represented in terms of log-likelihood ratios (LLR). First, we derive the LLR when we use the space-time block codes at transmitter. The selection scheme is found to be simple due to the fact that the LLR is split into components that are concerned with each bit of a block. We find that the scheme outperforms the conventional SNR-selection scheme by $1.5 dB$ when two transmit antennas and two receive antennas are used. We note that in this scheme the selection is done block by block. Second, we consider another selection scheme that selects different receive antennas for each bit rather than for each block. We derive the bit error rate (BER) of the second scheme when two transmit antennas are used at transmitter. We find that the second scheme provides power gains of $0.5 dB$, $2.0 dB$ over the first scheme and the conventional SNR-selection scheme, respectively, when two transmit antennas and two receive antennas are used. The LLR is split bit by bit because of the orthogonality of the space-time block codes. As a result, the optimum receive antenna selection scheme is simplified, and moreover the bit by bit selection scheme is considered. We present bit error probabilities for two optimum selection schemes and show that they outperform the conventional SNR-selection scheme.
