Terminal mobility and personal mobility managements in mobile communication systems = 이동통신 시스템에서 단말이동성과 개인이동성 관리

This dissertation is concerned with terminal mobility (TM) and personal mobility (PM) managements in mobile communication systems. First, we propose a PM management scheme to manage PM information related to universal personal telecommunications (UPT) users for incall registration, incall deregistration, incall registration reset by mobile terminal (MT) owner, and incall delivery to UPT users in mobile communication networks.The relative cost of PM management, i.e., the ratio of cost per unit time for supporting both TM and PM management to that of TM management is derived and the effect of PM management is analyzed. Second, we analyze two MT power {\it on}/{\it off} state management schemes based on the level of location registers for managing the state information of MTs.The effect of management is investigated from the aspects of radio interface, signaling network, and database by modeling the state transition behavior of an MT for varying the parameters of both MTs and mobile communication networks. Although database processing overhead exists, management of MT power {\it on}/{\it off} states provides a significant reduction in overhead from the aspects of radio interface and signaling network. Third, we propose an adaptive algorithm to select an appropriate MT power {\it on}/{\it off} state management scheme for each mobile user based on the expected {\it on}/{\it off} duration and the expected number of incoming call arrivals between two detach and attach requests (call-to-transition ratio (CTR)). The results show that the proposed algorithm adaptively selects an appropriate scheme for varying the mobile user`s CTR. The effect of the shape of the MT power {\it off} duration distribution and the probability that a caller and a callee are in the same zone on the adaptive algorithm are also investigated.
