dc.description.abstractWhen a dormant mobile node passes through a paging area, search time for the mobile node depends on the position of the mobile node. When the dormant mobile node is far from the location that it has reported before, the paging cost has a higher value. The search time for the dormant mobile node can be decreased by making the mobile node report the current position to tracking agent. The reporting period of the mobile node is decided by the threshold value of the mobile node. We adopted average signaling cost and average paging delay as performance measures. We compared the proposed scheme with the conventional one in various environments, and showed the superiority over the conventional one. The average signaling cost is composed of registration cost and paging cost. Network systems decide which cost is more important. We inspected how the average signaling cost varies according to threshold value of the mobile node when the weight factor varies. When the threshold value is inappropriate, the average signaling cost increases and the total system efficiency decreases. Dormant monitoring agent, tracking agent, and paging agent are needed for IP paging. We define three agents as mobile agents. The cost varies according to how the mobile agents are arranged. As a performance measure, we used the sum of the following two values: the number of signaling messages among mobile agents and the number of signaling messages between mobile agents and the corresponding mobile node. We proposed three configuration methods: 1) when dormant monitoring agent and tracking agent are located above paging agent, 2) when dormant monitoring agent and tracking agent are located at foreign agent, 3) when dormant monitoring agent and tracking agent are located at paging agent. We evaluated the performance of each configuration and showed that third configuration produces the best result.
