dc.description.abstract | Korea has been shifting its paradigm of growth from a fast follower to an innovation leader in various industries. Correspondingly, the role of a science park is becoming increasingly important and Korea’s major science park, i.e. Daedeok Innopolis, has been consistently requested to transform its characteristics from Research Park to Industrial Park with expectations of more economic value creation rather than knowledge creation. However, with the limited number of studies on Korean science parks, our understanding and policy establishment has also been limited. Therefore, this study examines the network structural characteristics of Daedeok Innopolis through comparing them with a representative science park in Germany, i.e. Silicon Saxony, which has similar characteristics to Daedeok Innopolis, except its visible industrial performances. We find that the interactions among organizations regarding technological knowledge creation within clusters are much more active and diverse in Daedeok Innopolis, while they are more intense in Silicon Saxony. In addition, while the roles of universities in Daedeok Innopolis are diverse, in Silicon Saxony, the university functions primarily as a liaison facilitating information exchanges among industries and other organizations. However, in Silicon Saxony, companies more actively participate in mutual interactions with various entities of clusters, while those of Daedeok Innopolis remain limited. In particular, we find that that the networking within Daedeok Innopolis is more overlapped and constrained than that within Silicon Saxony, which indicates that Daedeok Innopolis is somehow less efficiently structured from the perspective of social capital theory. We also discuss some important policy implications based on our results. | - |
